A Look at Joseph

By: Renee Patton

“…the Lord was with him….” Genesis 39:23b

For the last few months, Joseph has been at the center of all things at church. I taught about Joseph’s life in my Junior Church class, and it seemed every adult Sunday School lesson tied back to Joseph somehow. God has a wonderful way of bringing comfort while in the midst of life’s storms. While I continue with so many unknowns of my own, God has given me a few reminders of His goodness, grace, and mercy in Joseph’s life and how to continue each day with purpose.

God is in your plans just like He was with Joseph. We must trust God in all we do and do not even see – faith!  Trusting God is probably the hardest aspect of faith we must make real in our own lives.

Joseph trusted God in the pit, Potiphar's house, and in prison. The tumultuous storm will pass!  We must trust in God’s goodness and know it will come.

Joseph saw grace and mercy when he interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams. Joseph was restored to more than he was before he was put in prison. Joseph’s endurance during the challenging times caused him to save his family. The same family that sold him. No one can tell me God does not work in mysterious ways. Imagine being sold, then put as second in command over a country, and eventually saving his family from famine.

God never promises that suffering will cease in this life. Our trust in Him draws us closer to Him. Joseph was pure in his intentions, even after their father died. Joseph took care of his family. No matter the burden or trial, God is there and gives comfort, love, support, and guidance– if only we ask!

Remembering others who have endured like Joseph, helps bring peace to our thoughts. Joseph endured like no other; yet was used to save the very family who despised him. Honor God first and foremost. When life is upside down and seemingly falling apart – honor God. Remember Joseph and how he was blessed after such turmoil. Joseph had to keep his heart right and so must we!  God was with Joseph and He will be with each of us also!
